The Exodus the Hebrews had looked towards for over 400 years of increasingly cruel, harsh enslavement had finally arrived. Moses, in both his anger and disappointment, threw down and shattered the words given to him by God. The words intended to be put in front of the people so they would know what they needed to in order that they could live a holy life.
Another characteristic He shows us is His desire that we choose to follow him, Exodus 35:5 pointedly declares “Everyone who is willing”. Not everyone but everyone who is willing. The gift of choice is a troubling one. If He knew what we would do with it, why did He give it?
Humankind has provided plenty of examples of why. God wants to be loved by us. In our history, we’ve had men who wanted to be kings (or rulers, etc), they wanted their people to follow them because they believed in them, in what they stood for. Who were these men? Stalin, Hitler, Hussein, Castro, Mussolini …. these are but a few. God knows what would happen when He gave mankind free will; he also knew what would happen if it created a bunch of puppets as these men were trying to do.
How are you living your life today? Have you taken even one short moment and focused on God? Have you thanked him for your home, family, car, job, food? When you last went to church, for those of you that go, did you go to worship God or to make yourself feel better?
